                              FAQ

Many questions will be asked, so it's only right we answer them.

What activities will the students be participating in?

  • Safari

  • Constitution Hill

  • Mandela House

  • Apartheid Museum

  • Qwa Qwa

  • And many more places...

What is the weather like?

  • We will be there for the end of their summer beginning of fall, so the weather may be up and down. But the highs are to be in 80's with the lows in the 50s at night.

  • Students should bring sunscreen, hats and other protectors from the sun.

  • There is a packing list with a link, at the bottom of the page.

Where will you all be staying and eating while in South Africa?

  • Dee of Village Gossip Production is over choosing the safest and cleanest location for us to reside while in Johannesburg. When we gain this information, we will be sure to inform all guardians of the decision.

  • As for eating, we will have three meals a day. Breakfast and Dinner are covered in the overall cost of the trip, but lunch will be on the student.

How much money should I give my student, if they attend this trip?

  • We advise for students to either have a prepaid visa or a debit card, with the ability to have money transferred into the account.

  • The total amount can range from $450-$700.

As this is a culture exchange, will my student be meeting other high school aged youth?

  • Yes, our relationship with Village Gossip Production has allowed for us to connect with youth from a community called Qwa Qwa, where they have a youth program with students who are high school aged.

Will I have to make a deposit and attend fundraisers for this trip?

  • Yes, we are asking all interested participants (students and chaperones) to make a deposit of $1,000.

  • The first $50 will be collected at the first parent meeting and the next three payments of $316.67 will be collected on the 20th of August through October.

  • Yes, to fundraisers!

My student is leaving a couple days before Spring Break, what should they do?

  • We are asking all students and parents to inform their teachers of the dates they will be out, so they can make up missing assignments upon their return from the trip.

  • Ms. K will be talking to teachers as well so that students will be given a grace period for the days they miss.

Are students and chaperones required to attend classes and fundraisers for this trip?

  • Yes, everyone who makes a deposit of $50 is required to attend 5 fundraisers for the trip and all classes, unless they have informed Ms. K otherwise. Your participation is what makes this trip a reality!

  • Courses will focus on teambuilding, the history of South Africa and travel behavior in another country.

My child has allergies and/or asthma, what will be the protocol to ensure their safety?

  • Following the protocol of OUSD and to keep students safe, we are requiring all students who have either asthma or allergies to carry a full inhaler and epi-pen on the trip. The lead adult support staff will be responsible for keeping these materials while on the trip.
